The Ethiopia Deaf Xperience (EDX) is an initiative of a group of deaf young adults from Ethiopia who are committed to spreading positive awareness about deafness in Ethiopia, and creating opportunities for work and income for themselves. It concerns a group of 12 people who are exceptionally talented in dance and drama. One of their main activities is to give workshops and performances on deafness, deaf culture, and sign language. The workshops and performances are aimed at an Ethiopian audience in order to counteract the often negative image of deafness. They have performed in schools and government agencies across the country. In addition, they have also developed a program aimed at tourists in collaboration with experts from different countries. These are workshops devoted to non-verbal communication and Deaf culture. It is a popular activity with tourists and the deaf actors earn an income from it.
A number of EDX members are also active as tour guides for deaf and sign language guests. They guide guests throughout Ethiopia.
The project was funded in the past by Respo International from a European grant (Erasmus Plus). However, this grant was only temporary and we are trying to raise new resources so that they can further develop their activities.EDX have created their own website: www.ethiopiadx.com
