SPAT Project
SPAT stands for Sport and Physical Ability Trainer and is aimed at training people with disabilities in developing countries to become a sports and games instructor, and then guiding them to jobs in relevant sectors. The aim is to contribute to the emancipation of people with disabilities in developing countries by means of sports and exercise.
The SPAT project was introduced in Ethiopia in 2009 and is still being carried out there today. Until 2016, funding came from the Respo International foundation from Zwolle. However, in the years that followed, several grants came to an end and Respo ceased to exist. In 2018, Wesemann Travel took over the guidance and financing, and this project has now been accommodated at the Johan Wesemann Fund. In 2020 and beyond, the project will be funded with the help of the Friends of Effatha foundation.
The SPAT project has had a major impact on the lives of people with disabilities in and around the capital Addis Ababa. Since the involvement of Wesemann Travel, more and more deaf people have become involved in the project. In 2019 the project was also introduced in Kenya where it is exclusively aimed at the deaf and hard of hearing. We are honored to support this project and we will
